J’puraXtreme Hackathon 1.0: A First-of-Its-Kind DSA Challenge at USJ
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura recently hosted an exhilarating milestone event: J’puraXtreme Hackathon 1.0. This hackathon, organized by the IEEE USJ Computer Society chapter, was the university’s inaugural hackathon and a landmark for its Computer Society. The competition not only allowed participants to showcase their skills in Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) but also served as a training ground for the prestigious IEEEXtreme 18.0.
The J’puraXtreme journey kicked off with two online awareness sessions, led by industry experts to guide participants in mastering DSA concepts and competitive problem-solving strategies. The first session, held on September 14th, featured Mr. Dilanka Perera from SLASSCOM, who shared essential techniques and industry insights. The second session on September 21st, conducted by Mr. Dulan Dias from EchonLabs, provided participants with advanced tactics to tackle complex DSA challenges effectively.
On September 2nd, the hackathon’s online preliminary round put over 300 teams to the test in a thrilling two-hour sprint, where they tackled a variety of DSA problems under a strict time limit. The top 10 teams who proved their mettle in the initial round advanced to the highly anticipated final round, held on September 28th. This on-site, 8-hour coding marathon was intense and fast-paced, challenging participants to push their skills to the limit.
After a full day of strategic problem-solving, Team Code Crackers from the University of Moratuwa claimed the first-place title, demonstrating exceptional command of DSA. Following closely behind, Scope 1.0 from UoM secured the first runner-up position, with Creative Coders from UoM rounding out the top three as second runners-up. Their achievements were a testament to their preparation, teamwork, and technical prowess.
A successful event like J’puraXtreme Hackathon 1.0 is only possible with dedicated support from partners and sponsors who believe in empowering future tech innovators. WSO2 and CBA joined as bronze partners, while Omega Line Ltd. came on board as a silver banner partner, and PTE Labs supported as a bronze banner partner. Knowledge partner SLASSCOM provided valuable resources, guiding participants with industry-aligned insights. The event was also supported by Manner Food Restaurant, Pelwatte Dairies, Hilly Spring Water, and HCB as gift partners, ensuring the participants had the essentials to stay fueled. Digital media partners CodeChefs and HackSL helped amplify the event’s impact.
Thanks to the dedication of the organizing committee, the enthusiasm of the participants, and the unwavering support of our partners, J’puraXtreme Hackathon 1.0 was not only a triumph but a testament to the innovation and ambition of the IEEE USJ community. This remarkable event has set a new benchmark for future hackathons at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, igniting a passion for excellence and innovation that will drive the university’s tech scene forward.
